What is Encaustic Paint?

Encaustic paint is a mixture of beeswax, damar resin and pigment. Sold in solid blocks, it is first melted on a heated palette, then applied with natural bristle brushes.

Encaustic, or beeswax base paint has a translucent quality not found in other mediums. It dries immediately, allowing for transparent layers to be applied in rapid succession.


What is the Encaustic Painting process?

Encaustic beeswax paint is heated to 150F-200F, making it liquid enough to brush on. Layers dry almost immediately. When the paint is sufficiently heated, a brushed on layer will fuse with the under layer.
